Who Is Beyonce's Makeup Artist?

by Marisa Dalpiaz

Have you ever wondered how Beyonce woke up like this with her flawless fresh face? It's not just because she hit the genetic lottery. Meet the talented artist creating all of her looks, Beyonce's makeup artist, Sir John, a New York native who studied art in Atlanta. The artist-turned-makeup-maven admits that he "had no idea what mascara was" until a few years ago, but boy, did he learn fast! Sir John figured it out while he was working on a catalogue shoot and the makeup artist didn't show up. He used what the model had in her makeup bag (without brushes, just his hands) to create a look.

Sir John moved from Atlanta to New York at age 20. A series of backstage gigs with British makeup artist,Pat McGrath and makeup maven Charlotte Tilbury brought him face to face with none other than Queen Bey herself. They met backstage at Tom Ford’s spring 2011 show and Beyonce asked Sir John to join him on tour. It was while he was traveling on tour with Beyonce that Sir John first learned how amazing L’Oreal Paris’ color palette is. Beyonce is one of their brand ambassadors after all. Sir John slates Beyonce’s Infallible lip color line as one of his favorite products from the brand.

It seems that Sir John's career is expanding beyond Beyonce. Not only does he work with other major celebs like Chrissy Teigen and SooJoo Park, he's branching out and creating his own products. Inspired by Beyonce's passion for the brand, Sir John has accepted a new position as a celebrity makeup artist with L'Oreal Paris which the brand announced last month. Waking up flawless just got a little more affordable. All three of Sir John's L'Oreal Paris kit staples are only $20 and under at the moment, and all three of the products have a neutral palette to help you create that fierce fresh-faced look.

The perfect palette for creating a smokey look that is still natural. (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Nude, $20, lorealparisusa.com)
