Remember When Ellen Shared Her Sweet Wedding Vid?

by Daniela Cabrera

On Friday, June 26, the Supreme Court of the United States made a decision that will shake history for years to come. SCOTUS found it unconstitutional for states to ban gay marriage, and marriage between same-sex couples will be seen as valid in the court of law for ALL citizens in EVERY state. It is truly a beautiful moment and in the midst of some disheartening events in our country for the past few months, it is wonderful to be able to celebrate love. So, so many American citizens can now move forward and profess their love "officially" and equally, as should have always been the case.

I am a believer in equal rights for all human beings and I commend the many artists and people in the public eye who have always supported gay marriage throughout the years. One such person has been Ellen DeGeneres, who has consistently been very open with her sexuality and in sharing the details of her relationship with her wife, Portia de Rossi. In a time when gay marriage was still very taboo, Ellen DeGeneres opened up on her show about her 2008 wedding to de Rossi and shared their beautiful wedding video with her viewers.

The wedding video was a turning point for many viewers, as many had never witnessed the intimate union between a same-sex couple. The video shows the emotional moment when DeGeneres sees de Rossi in her dress for the first time, and it is just as beautiful as it would be for any other couple getting married. I dare you to try to hold it together when Joshua Radin starts playing their wedding song, "Today", in the background. (Actually, I wouldn't do that to you. It's impossible to hold back the tears.)

Although she took a beautiful step in being completely honest with her true self, that doesn't mean DeGeneres hasn't continued to be attack for her marriage.

Early in January 2015, Christian author and evangelist Larry Tomczak published an op-ed in the Christian Post, specifically calling out DeGeneres for being a lesbian and her "marriage." (His quotes, not mine.) Almost immediately, DeGeneres reacted to this ridiculous and offensive article about her supposed "gay agenda," using a little sarcasm and a lot of sass. She said she was not quote-unquote married, but simply, MARRIED, and that she only wishes to push the agenda of people being kind to each other. She explained,

I'm not here to brainwash anyone, but, listen to the sound of my voice... Attention, youth of the world, I want you to live your lives being exactly who you are. Be true to yourself. The most important thing is to be true to yourself.

The talk show host has always done that, and today I celebrate her and all of the many people who can now live their truth and their lives — as is their right!
