Are Balenciaga & Alexander Wang Breaking Up?

by Marc Cuenco

There's a major shakeup happening in the middle of the Paris couture shows this week. According to Women's Wear Daily, Balenciaga and Alexander Wang are in contract negotiations, leaving several industry insiders to speculate that they are parting ways. Wang joined the iconic fashion house in 2012 after taking over creative director duties from Nicolas Ghesquière. In one of his first interviews as Balenciaga's designer, Wang told Racked what the label meant to him.

"[Balenciaga has] a heritage, there's a DNA and a framework that is always in my mind whenever I'm working," Wang said. "During fittings, through meetings and through store discussions."

News of a possible split between the European label and Wang definitely came as a surprise to many because the designer has brought much success to the company ever since he presented his first collection during 2013 Paris Fashion Week. The 31-year-old designer also turned the brand into a favorite among A-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Taraji P. Henson, and Lady Gaga — who wore Balenciaga to the 2015 Met Gala and was accompanied to the star-studded event by Wang himself. In addition to designing for Balenciaga, Wang also heads up his popular namesake label. Some have guessed that Wang might consider leaving Balenciaga only to focus on his brand.

"There are two completely different worlds, and I think it really helps that they're in two different cities," Wang said in 2013. "It really sets the tone to tell two different stories."
