If Men Were Treated Like Women In Film

by Lara Rutherford-Morrison

A new video from BuzzFeed explores what would happen if men were treated like women in film. The results are funny and painful: Funny, because the way men are treated in this video is completely absurd. Painful, because women in film still get this treatment All. The. Time. (Click here if you don’t believe me). Most of us are aware that women are dramatically underrepresented in the film industry. According to a study released last year, female characters make up less than a third of speaking roles in films worldwide, women occupy only about 23 percent of film industry positions, and only 7 percent of film directors are female. As stark as these stats are, there’s a difference between knowing something intellectually and actually seeing it in practice. Many of us — women included— are so used to the status quo that we are sometimes not even aware of how messed up the system is. By casting men in the role usually occupied by women, this video highlights just how ridiculous the gender imbalance in the film industry is, as well as the problematic ways that people approach the women who are in film.

In one scene, a woman persists in calling her friend a “male director,” who does a lot of "really great male-oriented content," as if he were a different species from, you know, directors.

In another, women speculate about whether a guy used his manly wiles to work his way up the ladder.

And we all know that some genders just can’t do action, right?

Plus HORMONES.
