Austin Butler & Kaia Gerber Have Had The Ultimate Whirlwind Romance
The actor explained why he brought someone else other than Gerber as his date to the 2023 Oscars.
Thanks to his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis, Austin Butler has quickly become a Hollywood sensation. And as evidenced at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the actor’s current success isn’t limited to his career — his love life is blooming, too. Butler and his girlfriend, model Kaia Gerber, made their most attention-grabbing red carpet appearance with some serious PDA at the 2022 Met Gala.
Some fans were confused when Butler, who earned his first Oscar nomination for Elvis, didn’t bring Gerber to the Academy Awards on March 12. There’s an understandable reason for that. Butler instead brought his longtime agent James Farrell to the 2023 Oscars on March 12. He explained why Farrell was his plus-one on the red carpet instead of Gerber. “I”ve got my best friend here with me, who is also my agent,” Butler said on ABC’s pre-show, as reported by PEOPLE. “And I owe my career to him, so as a thank you, I wanted him to be by my side tonight.”
However, Gerber still partook in the Oscars celebrations with Butler later that night at the afterparties. The couple got together after Gerber broke up with Euphoria star Jacob Elordi in November 2021. Butler had already been single for a year by that point, having parted ways with Vanessa Hudgens following their nine-year relationship in January 2020.
As we wait for the next big red carpet moment between Butler and Gerber, here’s a break down of their relationship timeline so far.
December 2021: Dating Rumors
On Dec. 21, 2021, Butler and Gerber were snapped by the Daily Mail leaving a yoga class in Los Angeles. This is the first time Gerber had been seen with another beau after her breakup with Elordi a month earlier.
A day later, an insider told People they were spending a lot of time together. “She seems really happy. All of her friends think he’s really cute,” the source said.
January 2022: Spotted in Los Angeles
In the new year, the rumored couple were seen getting very cozy with each other. People magazine spotted the pair leaving Erewhorn Market in Los Angeles accompanied by the model’s rescue dog Milo.
Later that day, Gerber spoke to People about how lockdown made her “re-evaluate” her personal life. “I think, it’s so important people are realizing how important their happiness is outside of work, when you don’t have all these outside resources to gain happiness from, where that internal happiness comes from.”
February 2022: Valentine’s Day Date
Despite not making it official, Butler and Gerber were spotted in London celebrating their first Valentine’s Day together. The pair looked uber stylish, with the 20-year-old model sporting a bucket hat and brown coat combo while 30-year-old Butler opted for a long peacoat and jumper.
March 2022: Red Carpet Official
The couple soon made their way to Paris, where they were seen leaving a hotel in the French capital on March 22. Four days later, Butler and Gerber finally made it red carpet official back in the United States as they attended W Magazine’s Best Performances party.
On March 28, the couple were seen in San Fernando Valley getting coffee before heading to a birthday party for Ashley Tisdale’s daughter with bags of presents in tow, the Daily Mail reports.
April 2022: Holding Hands In Malibu
In early April, Butler and Gerber held hands while visiting Malibu’s Farmers’ Market. The model’s dog Milo made another adorable appearance, this time being walked by Butler.
May 2022: PDA At The Met Gala & Cannes
May was a big month for Butler and Gerber. The couple attended red carpets for two of the world’s biggest events: the Met Gala and the Cannes Film Festival. While they decided to walk the Met Gala carpet separately (Butler walked with Elvis Presley’s widow, Priscilla Presley), they eventually reunited at the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, reached for each other’s hands and shared a kiss.
Cut to May 26, where Butler and Gerber stunned the world with some PDA following the premiere Elvis at Cannes Film Festival. Both wore stunning outfits by Celine, with Gerber in a beautifully vivid red halter dress and Butler sporting a classic tuxedo.
January 2023: Golden Globes Makeout
Gerber didn’t walk the red carpet with Butler at the 2023 Golden Globes, but she did join him backstage at the ceremony. As seen in photos captured by Page Six, the two shared a celebratory smooch after the actor won his first Golden Globe for Best Leading Actor in a Drama. Later that month, Gerber accompanied Butler at Lisa Marie Presley’s funeral service at her late father Elvis’ Graceland estate.
February 2023: Their First Red Carpet Of Awards Season
Although Butler landed his first nominations for Elvis at every major award show, including another win for Best Actor at the 2023 BAFTAs, Gerber did not accompany him on any red carpet throughout awards season. However, the two proved they were still going strong by attended W Magazine’s Best Performances Party together in February 2023, the same event where they made their public debut a year earlier. Apparently, the two “made out all night,” keeping their tradition of celebratory kisses.
March 2023: He Goes To The Oscars Without Her
Butler received his first Oscar nomination for Elvis, but Gerber wasn’t at the ceremony with him to celebrate. Instead, he brought his longtime agent, who he also considers to be his best friend. “I’ve known [James Farrell] since I was 17 years old and he also happens to be my agent,” Butler told Access Hollywood in February. “We were friends first, and I would not have my career without him. The amount of times that he’s helping me to decide on whether or not to do something or he’s pushed me to. He’s believed in me in moments where maybe I didn’t believe in myself.”
While Gerber didn’t accompany her boyfriend to the Oscars, she did join him at the afterparties.
The couple walked the red carpet at Vanity Fair’s Oscars Party together, holding hands and lovingly gazing into each other’s eyes.
