When Anne Hathaway confirmed that a third Princess Diaries movie was finally happening, her announcement left many fans asking the same question: Will Chris Pine be in it?

Pine, after all, had starred in the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement, playing Lord Nicholas Devereaux — the dashing love interest of Princess Mia Thermopolis.

Appearing on Today on Oct. 8, the actor was asked whether he’ll join the third movie. “I don’t know anything,” he said, much to the surprise of co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager. “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!” he said, reffering to The Walt Disney Company’s CEO. “The answer is I’ve gotta see. I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”

This isn’t the first time Pine has talked about The Princess Diaries 3. In May, he told Entertainment Weekly that he’d be open to reprising his role and outlined where he’d take the story.

“If it were me, it would take place… they’d have a time machine and they’d go back to the ’50s and it’d be like, 1955 in Rome,” Pine said. “It’d be like a Luca Guadagnino film, [if he] directs Princess Diaries 3. Now that is f****** fire.”

All Hail The Queen Of Genovia

The Hollywood Reporter first announced that Disney was developing a third Princess Diaries movie on Oct. 4, revealing that filming is scheduled for 2025. The outlet also confirmed that Adele Kim, who penned Crazy Rich Asians, will direct.

“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Kim said in a statement.

Hathaway later shared a now-viral Instagram video, in which she confirmed her involvement in the film. It’s currently unclear whether other cast members will return as well, such as Heather Matarazzo and Julie Andrews, who played Lilly Moscovitz and Queen Clarisse Renaldi, respectively.
