Admit it: The pandemic has likely been exasperating your wanderlust, causing you to daydream about running away to a remote island far away from people and Zoom fatigue. While the rest of us are daydreaming about an escape, Isley Reust actually did it.

Reust is a photographer and filmmaker based in Isafjordur, Iceland. She relocated to one of the most remote towns in Iceland in 2018 after spending years working in the film industry in Los Angeles. She recalls feeling unfulfilled in her career, which led her to a new life in Iceland. Reust has both German and American citizenship, which allowed her to settle in Isafjordur with relative bureaucratic ease.

Reust’s fishing village is home to only about 2,600 residents. She spends her time guiding visitors through nature expeditions and documenting the stunning beauty of the arctic landscape. She sat down with Bustle as part of our Relocated series to explain what she enjoys the most about the remote life and how she hopes it changes in the near future. Spoiler: She’s not planning to return to the big city life anytime soon; a more secluded one, on the other hand, is far more likely. Follow Reust’s adventures on Instagram for a closer look at the magnificent beauty of the Iceland.

Relocated explores the lives of daring individuals who stepped away from the rat race to build a life a little more unconventionally. Check out more episodes you might enjoy below:
