15 Foods You Didn’t Know Were Aphrodisiacs

BDG Media, Inc.

You know how it goes: At the beginning of a relationship you and your bae can't keep your hands off of each other, but eventually, you end up couching in sweats while marathoning Stranger Things. If you're in a romantic rut, try these 15 foods you didn't know were aphrodisiacs to help bring sexy back. You've likely heard that oysters can inspire feelings of desire, but if shellfish isn't your jam, there are plenty of other foods that can make you feel tingly in all of the right places.

According to Web MD, certain foods can increase sexual desire, but not in the way you might think. It's not always the effect food has on your body that suddenly makes you want to rip off your partner's clothes. Sometimes it's your mind's perception that certain foods are sexy that can make you feel more attracted to your BAE. "No food has been scientifically proven to stimulate the human sex organs," Elaine Magee, MPH, RD wrote for Web MD.

"But foods and the act of eating can suggest sex to the mind, which in turn can help stimulate desire in the body. And it certainly doesn't hurt to stack the sexual odds in your favor by enjoying foods you and your partner find sensual!" If the cheese doodles aren't making you swoon, consider trying these foods that you didn't know were aphrodisiacs to jumpstart your love life in 2018.

1

Chilis Bring The Heat

According to Magee, while not scientifically proven, "Foods that create warmth and moisture (like chili or curry) [are] thought to arouse 'heated' passion." Feeling all hot and bothered from eating spicy foods might make you feel hot for your partner, too.

2

Garlic Can Make You Gaga

OK, you might be thinking, no freakin' way because garlic can make you super stinky. However, if you both have garlic you won't notice the smell, and it can help turn up the heat in the bedroom. "The heat in garlic is what stirs up your libido," Laura Klein wrote for Organic Authority. "Garlic contains allicin, which is thought to increase blood flow to sexual organs." The bad news is that for the garlic to work, Klein noted, you have do eat it consistently. This is where odorless garlic pills can come in handy so you can get the benefits without smelling like an Italian restaurant.

3

Raw Oysters Boost Dopamine

Personally, I love oysters, and scientists say raw oysters really do boost your libido because they contain certain amino acids that stimulate hormones production. The time of year you eat raw oysters can increase sexual desire, too. "Spring, when the molluscs themselves are breeding, is best," Antimo D'Aniello, of the Laboratory of Neurobiology in Naples, told the Telegraph. "There is the highest concentration of these two amino acids then." Aside from their desire-inducing properties, eating oysters is also a sensual experience that can inspire sexual feelings.

4

Watermelon Increases Sex Drive

Watermelon affects the human body in the same way as Viagra, Klein noted on Organic Authority. "Bhimu Patil, researcher and director of the Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center at Texas A&M University, stated eating watermelon delivers Viagra-like effects on blood vessels throughout the body and may increase libido." It's thought that the citrulline amino acid in this lush, pink fruit can relax the blood vessels that stimulate your sex drive.

5

Chocolate Can Arouse The Senses

While chocolate does contain a chemical that can arouse emotions in the brain, Magee reported for WebMD that there is not enough of this chemical present in chocolate to actually boost your libido. However, the rich and creamy melt-in-your mouth texture of chocolate can inspire thoughts of desire.

6

Spice Makes Everything Nice

According to Magee, spices that are considered exotic can induce feelings of arousal. If you've ever been inside a spice shop, then you know what I'm talking about. "Historical accounts suggest that many of these foods, like cloves, anise seed, cinnamon, ginger, white pepper, cardamom, and thyme — had sterling aphrodisiac reputations in their native regions."

7

Asparagus Jump Starts Your Sex Drive

This one might not seem very sexy because it can make your pee smell, but according to Klein on Organic Authority, asparagus provides your body with an influx of B vitamins that increase histamine, which can jump start your sex drive.

8

Avocado Can Make You Think Of Sex

If you can get past the fact that avocados evolved from giant sloth poop, this fruit can make you think of sex. According to the website Eat Something Sexy, "The Aztecs, the first documented avocado eaters, dubbed the avocado tree ahuacuatl, or testicle tree. If you’ve ever seen avocados growing, you know that the fruits dangle low, often in pairs (testicles)." Personally, I've never thought about avocados this way, however the website also noted that a survey found that more than 60 percent of people associate avocados with feelings of sex and desire.

9

Pumpkin Seeds = Sex Mineral

According to Dr. Oz on Oprah.com, the zinc in pumpkin seeds are the ultimate sex mineral. "Studies show that women with a greater sex drive have higher levels of testosterone. To increase your testosterone, add zinc to your diet. Zinc blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. A quarter-cup serving of pumpkin seeds may do the trick."

10

Celery Promotes Pheromone Prodcution

You might know that who you're sexually attracted to has a lot to do with pheromones, the scents people give off that other people respond to. According to Dr. Oz, celery contains androsterone, which can stimulate pheromone production. "Once 'smelled,' pheromones can subconsciously affect the behavior of the receiving mate."

11

Honey Is Hot

Honey's appearance alone is sexy, however that's not the only reason honey is a natural aphrodisiac. "Honey contains boron, which may regulate hormone levels, and nitric oxide, which is released in the blood during arousal," Tori Avey reported for PBS. The word "honeymoon" actually came from honey.

12

Coffee Boosts Blood Flow

OK, maybe if Luke drank as much coffee as Lorelai on Gilmore Girls it wouldn't have taken four seasons for them to kiss. Aside from the boost of dopamine a cup of coffee can give you, Avey reported that: "The scent was found to be a major turn on for women in a study conducted by Mindlab International Laboratory in Sussex, UK." What's more, the alkaloids in coffee can reportedly help maintain sexual performance while also increasing stamina.

13

Strawberries Are Sensual

Strawberries are a pretty sexy fruit, so it's no surprise that they're associated with Valentine's Day. While some foods have chemical properties that can induce feelings of arousal, others can inspire thoughts of love and lust, and strawberries are at the top of this list. "The heart-shaped strawberry was once known as a symbol of Venus, the Roman goddess of love," Avey reported for PBS. "For a time the ancient Greeks forbade the eating of strawberries and all other red foods, which led many to believe that the mysterious berries held great powers."

14

Pomegranates Inspire Abundance

Having someone shell a pomegranate for you is sexy in itself. This exotic fruit, which is commonly associated with the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, is also seen as a symbol of fertility and abundance. "The pomegranate appears as a romantic symbol in sonnets and literature dating back centuries," Avey noted. While some studies have found that the pomegranate can lower cortisol and increase testosterone in both men and women, it's more likely that this fruit is another food that stimulates the brain due to its sensual appearance.

15

Truffles Are A Turn On

If you can put the fungal aspect of truffles out of your mind, truffles reportedly contain a floral essence that stimulates the body and mind, Alisa Gould-Simon, founder of Flora Luna, told Mind Body Green. "Depending on the flower elixir used, you can induce a feeling a joy, peacefulness, chillax, vitality, creativity ... the sky is the limit! It's like adding a magic potion to your food that makes people feel happy!"

Aside from eating certain foods to bring sexy back, watching people consume or even just touch certain foods, like fruit, can give you all the warm and sexy feels. If you want to test this theory, check out this Instagram account dedicated to the sensuality of fruit.
