How Many Days Of Trump's Presidency Are Left?

On April 29, it will have been 100 days since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, a date that will invite all the usual political score-keeping. Though if you're judging by the polls, the verdict seems to be in: Trump is on-pace for the lowest-ever approval ratings on his 100th day. And yet, for opponents of the new president ― progressives, Democrats, and anti-Trump conservatives alike ― the fact that it's only been slightly more than three months seems unthinkable. So, how many days of Trump's presidency are left, you ask?

The answer, when this piece goes live, is 1,363 days. Yup, you read that right ― still more than 1,300 days of America under Trump, barring anything unforeseen like impeachment. For some perspective, that means the few months you've just lived through, dizzying and politically destabilizing as they were, only amounted to less than 7 percent of Trump's first term.

And there's another important thing to keep in mind: There are 1,363 days left, but that's only if his presidency ends on Jan. 20, 2021. What if ― and resist your urge to shudder here, bear with me ― he actually wins reelection in 2020? Then, there would be a whopping 2,826 days left of the Trump presidency.

In that case, the first 100 days would represent a shade over 3.5 percent of Trump's total time in the White House. Of course, there's no guarantee that he'll win again in 2020, judging from the immense amount of trouble he's had in the early months of his administration.

It's far too early to make such predictions, however. Former President Bill Clinton also had a widely panned first 100 days ― albeit nowhere as near as bad in the opinion polls as Trump's ― but nonetheless cruised to reelection in 1996. In fact, no president has failed to win reelection since George H.W. Bush in 1992. Incumbency, suffice it to say, is a powerful force.

So in short, if you're a progressive who's hoping for this thing to be over soon, you're out of luck. But when Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020 finally rolls around, the country will have its chance to bail out of a second term of this administration. Just learn how to pace yourself, because it's going to be a long time before that fateful day, too ― 1,287 days to be exact.
