Here's All The Proof You Need That Rey Is A Gray Jedi In 'The Last Jedi'

From the looks of the full Last Jedi trailer, Rey isn't sure whether she's on the light side or the dark one. Thats why many many fans have wondered if she's something in-between: could Rey be a Gray Jedi?

First of all, you might be asking, what is a Gray Jedi? The term refers to any person in the Star Wars galaxy that possesses the Force and exists between the light and the dark sides. Yes, that would be the gray area. In Rey's case, Luke Skywalker seems unsure about her power, telling her in the trailer, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.” The notion that she is too powerful for Luke to train — just check out his shock when Rey's lightsaber abilities crack open the earth underneath them — could lead her to join up with Kylo Ren and the First Order.

But Rey's power may not mean she's destined for the dark side. It could just mean she's something completely different. Rey could actually be the first Gray Jedi, which might finally explain the meaning of Star Wars Episode VIII's title.

This isn't the first time Star Wars has teased the presence of Gray Jedi in the galaxy. It was actually mentioned in the third season of Star Wars Rebels, which introduced a new character named Bendu who claimed to walk the line between the light and dark sides.

It was again mentioned in the novelization of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a reference to the Journal Of The Whills, a Jedi handbook that was first referenced in the original trilogy.

First comes the day
Then comes the night.
After the darkness
Shines through the light.
The difference, they say
Is only made right
By the resolving of gray
Through refined Jedi sight.

At the time, it wasn't clear what the "resolving of gray" meant, but, after the release of the first Last Jedi trailer, some noted that a well-worn Luke Skywalker hinted that, for the Jedi to survive, they needed to go in a new direction. This means that he would be the last of the Jedi that we've come to know and could train Rey to be something different. He could even help her become something more powerful, since, when Luke asks Rey what she sees, she says, "Light. Darkness. A balance."

This is where the second definition of the Gray Jedi comes in handy. These particular Jedi were also people who believed that it wasn't always necessary to follow the Jedi Council, but to simply follow the Force. That means using the Force didn't always mean you'd be tapping into just the light side, but the dark one, too. These Jedi can use the dark side without being corrupted by it. It's something Qui-Gon Jinn may have done during his day.

Perhaps this is also a hint that Rey is related to Qui-Gon Jinn, something fans have theorized since the last movie. Some think she could be his granddaughter, while someone else believed Rey could be the reincarnate of Qui-Gon, pointing to their similar hairstyles. Another person came up with the far more bizarre theory that she is the result of a one-night stand between Qui-Gon and Anakin's mother, meaning she's also a secret Skywalker. This could explain the interesting connection between Rey and Kylo Ren.

These are just theories for now, but the idea that Rey is somehow stuck between the light and the dark sides is on full display in the first Last Jedi poster. In the shot, Rey's holding a lightsaber with blue and red light that cuts the image straight down the center. On one side, Luke's face, the other Kylo Ren's, and Rey is positioned right in the middle — caught between both sides.

It certainly appears to be a hint that the Gray Jedi will play a role in this new installment. And it's one fans will have time to ponder since The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15. The force may be with Rey, but how she decides to use it could get complicated.
