The 13 Most Terrifying 2017 Horror Movies

by Kayleigh Hughes

It's becoming less and less laughable (and more and more accurate) to say that one of the most terrifying horror movies of 2017 is our current reality where Donald Trump is president. However, regardless of whatever horrors are in store for the American people in 2017, we cannot let those distract us so thoroughly from our own lives that we are unable to celebrate and enjoy the things that we love, such as movies.

Horror movies are, in many ways, a welcome comfort and coping mechanism for the woes of our real lives. They force us to confront terrors, to decide to be horrified, and to express our raw and deeply human feelings. They get our heart rates up and our adrenaline pumping, and the truly terrifying ones stick with us long after we watch them. The 2017 slate of horror movies has some truly terrifying entries, including a number of classic remakes and sequels as well as some deeply original new stories.

Below is a list of some of the scariest horror movies of 2017, but of course, scary is in the eye of the beholder (for example, I am afraid of everything), so it's up to you to see them all and judge for yourself.

1

'Rings'

The third installment of the Ring franchise (the first of which was so scary to me I walked out of the theater before it was even halfway done) is set to up the ante even further, with the discovery of a "movie within the movie."

2

'Get Out'

The trailer for this wildly original and absolutely terrifying film has already made Get Out one of the most anticipated films of 2017. It's written and directed by Jordan Peele, and is more evidence that he is a genius.

3

'A Cure For Wellness'

A wellness center is not what it seems in this American-German psychological horror, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Dane "has a beautiful haunting face perfect for horror movies" DeHaan as well as the appropriately named Mia Goth.

4

'The Belko Experiment'

Eighty people are locked in the high-rise office where they work and told they must all kill each other or be killed. Welp.

5

'Saw: Legacy'

The Saw series is back again with installment number eight, and it looks like it's going to be brutal.

6

'Annabelle 2'

Dolls are creepy. Evil, demon dolls are absolutely horrifying. The sequel to 2014's Annabelle will make you think twice about the toys you give your kids.

7

'Amityville: The Awakening'

This is, stunningly, the 18th film in the Amityville series, and its release date has been pushed back since 2015, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's not terrifying.

8

Horror movie veteran Bella Thorne (she's also in Amityville: The Awakening) stars in this disturbing film about a home invasion.

9

'Leatherface'

Lionsgate

In this Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, a teenaged Leatherface escapes a mental institution and, uh, probably does lots of murders. Lots of very scary murders.

10

'It'

New Line Cinema

Stephen King's iconic creation Pennywise the Clown returns in this film adaptation of the 1986 horror novel of the same name. The Tim Curry version traumatized a generation, and this new one is sure to follow in those footsteps.

11

'God Particle'

This is the third film in producer J. J. Abrams' Cloverfield series, and it remains enigmatic and fascinating. Watch in horror as space station crew makes a terrifying discovery.

12

'Cage Dive'

This freaky found footage horror film about shark attacks is not likely to soften people's views of sharks anytime soon.

13

'Friday The 13th'

Paramount Pictures

The 13th installment in the series will bring Jason back again for some deeply bloody and disturbing adventures, and it looks like some other members of the Voorhees family will show us up as well.

Cheers to being able to choose our nightmares whenever we're able to.
