The British Prime Minister is reportedly safe after the attack in London on Wednesday, but Theresa May still stood with the London attack victims, as her spokesperson issued a statement on her behalf later that day.

The thoughts of the PM and the government are with those killed and injured in this appalling incident, and with their families.

May will chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee to determine how to further respond to the attack. The PM was in the Houses of Parliament when the tragic incident took place. And, as the Independent reports, she was a mere "40 yards away" from where the attack was taking place. However, she was soon reported safe after being rushed away from the area by car and taken to her offices at Downing Street. Also, according to a White House statement, May has spoken by phone with President Donald Trump, who "pledged the full cooperation and support of the United States Government in responding to the attack and bringing those responsible to justice." At least four people were killed in the attack, including pedestrians who were hit by the attacker in his car and a police officer who had been stabbed.

Police were originally called to Westminster Bridge at 2:40 pm to respond to a "firearms incident." However, as the situation developed, the London Metropolitan Police announced that it is treating the situation as an act of terrorism. The public is still waiting on more information on the attacker's identity and motive, and known terror groups didn't immediately claim responsibility for the attack.

Aside from May, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also released a statement on the attack, saying that his thoughts are with victims and their families. He went on to express his gratitude to police officers and first responders who "work so hard to keep us safe and show tremendous bravery in exceptionally difficult circumstances."

The Metropolitan Police force's counterterrorism department is currently investigating the attack, which came after the likelihood of a terrorist attack in the UK was reportedly very high. May is expected to issue further statements on the incident after her meeting in COBRA, or Cabinet Office Briefing Room A where emergency UK government meetings are held.

Politicians all over the world are expressing their condolences for victims and support for the UK government and people in the wake of this terrible attack. But all eyes are especially on May as she begins to lead the country through the aftermath.
