'Beauty And The Beast' Keeps The Original Songs

Walt Disney Studios

Disney is out to revamp your childhood with the new, live action Beauty and the Beast. The reimagining of the '90s animated classic updates the original with a few new plot twists, three brand new songs, and a totally new look. And while change can be exciting, it's not something you typically want in your favorite childhood movie. Fans of the original should rest assured that the new film does not make too many drastic changes to the story, but what about the songs. What songs aren't in the Beauty and the Beast remake, you ask? Well, it depends on your source material.

If you are an animated Beauty and the Beast purist expecting to see numbers like "Belle" and "Gaston" come to life, you're all set. Every musical number in the animated film is in the live action adaptation. (It's worth noting, however, that a few have slightly altered lyrics.) However, if you are a longtime fan of the Beauty and the Beast musical, which debuted in 1994, you might be disappointed. Not one of the original songs written for the Broadway musical appears in the live action film. Not even "Human Again," a song originally written for the film and added to the extended edition of Beauty and the Beast released in 2002.

If you're worried that the new songs written specifically for the live action adaptation won't live up to the Beauty and the Beast songs you already know and love, don't be. The new Beauty and the Beast songs are written by famed Disney composer, Alan Menken, the same man who composed the original Beauty and the Beast tracks and worked on the Broadway musical. "It's exciting. For me because I'm writing the new songs and scoring the new movie, it's a lot of work," Menken revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. As for what it's like having a third pass at Beauty and the Beast music, Menken said it provided a new challenge, "It's interesting and challenging to come back to the same source material three times."

In addition to Menken's original Beauty and the Beast songs — "Belle," "Gaston," "Be Our Guest," "Something There," "The Mob Song," and "Beauty and the Beast" — the new film features four additional musical numbers. I won't spoil them for you here, but just know that all Beauty and the Beast songs are Menken-approved.
