You may know by now that as many as five potential Game of Thrones spin-offs are in development over at HBO. The only known information about the stories is that they are prequels, they will center on events from Game of Thrones history that fans will recognize, and that they will not feature any characters that we have seen before. So, where will the Game of Thrones spin-offs take place? That's probably the easiest question to start with, yet George R. R. Martin's fictional universe is so big that there are a ton of possible answers.
All the best books have maps in them, and Game of Thrones is no exception. At least one of the five has got to take place outside of King's Landing, right? Actually, if we go back far enough in Game of Thrones history, the map won't look anything like what fans are used to on the original series. What if the series takes place outside of Westeros entirely, or before the Wall was built?
Still, it doesn't hurt to start guessing, and a setting mix-up will certainly make the opening credits exciting. Based on the potential plotlines, here are some locations that might be revisited in one of the spin-offs.
Dorne
The land presided over by House Martell seemed to draw the short straw on Game of Thrones — they entered the story too soon and left too late. A spin-off may be a good way to expand on that world.
Essos
Wouldn't it be cool to see an entire series set in Braavos, or Qarth? Game of Thrones fans only saw the other side of the Narrow Sea from the eyes of Westerosi born outsiders like Daenerys, Arya, and Tyrion. It would be cool to see
Valyria
Remember when Tyrion and Jorah Mormont sailed through those ruins — almost to the latter's doom? That haunted island could be the setting for one of the shows.
Westeros, Uncharted
If the series is about Aegon's Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, then the spin-off would cover a familiar landscape — just without all of those familiar landmarks.
Iron Islands
A lot of the interesting Greyjoy stories that remain unexplored on the HBO series unfortunately involve characters that we already know and love — which rules out a lot of spin-off potential. That said, don't you want to learn more about this seaside family? After all, what is dead may never die.
The Crownlands
We've seen King's Landing before, but not so much of the surrounding area. If the spin-off took on the story of House Blackfyre, a now extinct family who rebelled against the Targaryens on numerous occasions, the setting would be not too different from Game of Thrones. There just maybe wouldn't be as many roadtrips.
Way, Way North
If the spin-off is about the war between the Children of the Forest and the First Men, don't expect to see anything South of Hardhome for a while. A spin-off about the original White Walker invasion, known as the Long Night, would also have a similar setting.
Sothoryos & Ulthos
On the flip side, Digital Spy suggests that a series could take place on a third or fourth continent entirely. Forget Westeros and Essos. Though they haven't been mentioned on the current HBO series, Ulthos is supposed to be wooded and Southeast of where our heroes live. Sothoryos is, as one might expect, also to the South.
Depending on how many of these prospective spin-offs are filmed and then picked up to series, we could be seeing all of these locations in the future of the Thrones universe and more.
