Toby & Kate May Be In Danger On 'This Is Us'

Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Just when you think that one couple on This Is Us could live happily ever after, the show’s writers are here to screw it up for us. Toby, fresh off heart surgery, encourages his love Kate to head to a so-called “fat farm” (what she calls it, anyway) in order to lose some weight and learn some coping mechanisms for the rest of her life. But while she’s at camp, Kate meets the farm’s horse handler, and let’s just say he has the hots for her. Will Kate cheat on Toby on This Is Us?

Kate and Mr. Ed (which is what I want to call him from here on out) met when Kate was leaving a voicemail on Toby’s phone to come and pick her up because she does not want to be there anymore. Mr. Ed tells her to shut up because she’s annoying his horses, and basically reverse psychologies her into getting back into the drumming class she’s in and dealing with her life and repressed emotions and dad’s death. Heavy, huh? When Kate’s done bangin’ on a trash can, she thanks Mr. Ed for talking her back into the room, and he says that she is “sexy as hell” and oh my god, Kate, Toby just had heart surgery for you and proposed, are you really going to do this?

Previews for upcoming episodes say that there is going to be a bit of a love triangle and damn, I hope that’s exaggerated. Toby has, to his own admission, spent twenty years of his life doing grand gestures to get women to fall in love with him, and the grandest gesture of all—flying across the country on Christmas—was for Kate. How could she accept his proposal and then bail with the horse man? I hope that this is just a momentary blip, like when someone flirts with you and you’re like, “Who? Me?” and it’s a self-esteem boost, because if Kate and Toby don’t end up together on This Is Us, there will not be enough pillows in the world for me to scream into.
