2022 Emmys are quickly approaching. This star-studded event is among Hollywood’s most glamorous nights, and there’s been plenty of head-turning fashion on the red carpet over the years. Celebs including Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Kerry Washington always pull out all the sartorial stops at the Emmys, often referencing everyone’s favorite decades — the ’90s and ’00s — for inspiration.
Last year’s Emmys saw a glamorous return to the in-person red carpet, and, boy,
did it not disappoint. As expected, nods to Y2K style were present. And as the ‘90s and ‘00s trend has cemented even more into fashion these days, we can likely expect even more red carpet homages to the memorable fashion decades — especially with the likes of Sydney Sweeney, Jung Ho-yeon, Lily James, and Zendaya as nominees.
If current stylist-approved trends from other
red carpets this year, as well as previous shows, are any indication, the ’90s and ’00s will play a major role in what many of the attendees ultimately decide to wear for the big night. So, what should you be on the lookout for fashion-wise come Monday night? Expect to see halter top necklines, ‘90s goth, 2000s glam, platform shoes, and expertly placed cutouts, proving that the influence of Y2K is alive and well on the red carpet.
Before Emmys 2022, take a walk down memory lane with some of the best ’90s- and ’00s-inspired Emmys outfits from years past.

This 1992 outfit from Cindy Crawford is one of the most iconic Emmys red carpet looks ever. As if
the beret wasn’t enough, this look perfectly encapsulates chic mid-‘90s style, from the dark berry red lip and high-slit midi skit to the sheer black tights and layered silk bustier. Holly Hunter’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2000 Frank Trapper/Corbis Entertainment/Getty Images
Even back in 2000, this was a bold red carpet choice made by Holly Hunter. With bedazzled low-rise pants and a
high-neck tank top in lieu of a traditional gown, this look screams 2000s fashion. Plus, check out that ultra-Y2K arm band. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2003 James Devaney/WireImage/Getty Images
A U-shaped neckline was a favorite for glamor in the ‘90s and early 2000s. Other style essentials of the era were minimalist jewelry and strappy stiletto heels.

Talk about ‘00s fashion! This strapless, front-slit gown by Emanuel Ungaro in all of its flowy sapphire glory is
very of the 2005 essence. The big hoop earrings, chunky chrome cuff, peep toe sandals, and small glitzy clutch add to it even more. Kourtney Kardashian’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2009 Gregg DeGuire/FilmMagic/Getty Images
Strapless gown? Check. Chunky bracelet? Check. Now the real question is, are platform pumps hiding underneath that gown?

Stacked bracelets, a plunging neckline, and peep toe pumps make this fiery red ensemble the ultimate nod to the 2000s. The subtle ruching is another element that was popular throughout the early aughts.

all of them? Big earrings, a one-shoulder silhouette, and a side cutout make this look a true ’00s-inspired winner. Yara Shahidi’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2018 Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty Images
Raise your hand if you wore a halter top dress to your prom
in the 2000s. This style is back and better than ever, complete with an era-appropriate oversized floral appliqué that’s giving “glam corsage” vibes. Sandra Oh’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2018 Steve Granitz/WireImage/Getty Images
Who doesn’t love a stacked bangle moment? Back in the ’00s, cuffs and chunky bracelets were everywhere, and they’re sure to be a popular accessory for Emmys 2022.

Corsets worn as tops were a huge trend in the 2000s, thanks in part to
Moulin Rouge! and the entire “Lady Marmalade” era. It’s a trend that has blown up recently, from casual streetwear looks to red carpet glam. Kerry Washington’s Emmys Red Carpet Look, 2021 Rich Fury/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
Kerry Washington makes this list for a second time with this recent 2021 look that is heavily inspired by Y2K fashion with its

Another outfit from
last year’s award ceremony, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Dior Haute Couture look pays a major homage to ‘90s glamour. With its minimalist color, silk slip silhouette, and high, collar bone-exposing neckline, this dress could be plucked straight from the ‘90s.
