When Rep. Ilhan Omar took office in 2018, she and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan, became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. As the first and only hijab-wearing woman in Congress, the Minnesota representative broke barriers before even casting a vote. Since then, she’s joined Tlaib and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley to form a progressive group, “The Squad,” with household recognition and Capitol Hill staying power.
Part of the group’s widespread appeal has been credited to their deft social media use. Omar, a former refugee, is often quick to speak out on Twitter and Instagram, even if it stirs controversy. This Muslim Women’s Day, we’re looking back at some of Omar’s most powerful speeches and statements, on topics ranging from police brutality to self advocacy.
