April & May Taurus Zodiac Signs Are Actually Pretty Different

Those born in April are more sensual, for one.

An astrologer breaks down the major differences between April Taureans and May Taureans

Just because you share a sun sign with someone doesn’t mean you’ll have automatic cosmic camaraderie. In fact, the month you were born can affect how you act, what you care about, and even how others perceive you. Case in point? April versus May Tauruses.

You’re a Taurus if you were born between April 20 and May 20. Taurus is an earth sign ruled by Venus and represented by the bull, and it’s also a fixed sign, known to be steady and responsible. The Tauruses of the world value comfort and stability, they enjoy the finer things in life, and they also love love.

This is true for all Tauruses, to one degree or another, but depending on your actual birthday, it can change how much of a “Taurus” you truly are. According to astrologers, an April Taurus will often have the most stereotypical or classic traits associated with the zodiac sign, and these traits tend to morph and shift as you move closer to May 20, which marks the start of Gemini season.

Below are the biggest differences between April Taurus and May Tauruses, according to astrologers.

A lot of the differences among zodiac signs can be chalked up to your birth chart and the fact it contains many planets that influence your personality — and your sun sign is just one piece of that complex puzzle.

While everyone born between April 20 and May 20 is a Taurus — and that means you all share some core Taurus qualities, like romantic compatibility — everyone has different Mercury, Venus, Mars, and rising zodiac signs, and that can impact the way you chase after goals, manage your relationships and feelings, and how you think about life.

How close you were born to the cusp of another sign can also play a role in how “Taurus-y” you truly are, though another, perhaps larger factor is your “decan.” A decan is the concept that every zodiac sign can be broken down into three subdivisions on the zodiac wheel.

Each decan contains ten degrees or days — so the first 10 degrees of a sign is the first decan, the next 10 degrees make up the second decan, and the final 10 degrees comprise the third decan. Each decan is also co-ruled by a different planet, further impacting how a zodiac sign’s energy is expressed outwardly.

Every day the sun travels about one degree into a sign, which means most April Tauruses will be first decan Tauruses, as the sun will traverse the first 10 degrees of the sign. Meanwhile, most May-born Tauruses will either be second or third decan Tauruses.

With decans as a foundation, let’s keep moving through some of the most notable differences between April Tauruses and May Tauruses.

April Tauruses Have The Most Typical Taurean Traits

When you picture a Taurus in all their glory, you likely imagine an April Taurus. And yes, that’s because April Tauruses fall into that first, most potent decan.

According to astrologer Stina Garbis, an April Taurus will be direct, stubborn, and focused. They’re the passionate lovers of the zodiac and the hard workers who are extra-driven just like their namesake, the bull. And they also love all things fancy.

“A one-degree Taurus is going to be different from a 28-degree Taurus,” she tells Bustle. “Because each sign goes through a cycle, these traits blend into the next. So you’re moving from the cardinal sign Aries, which is an impulsive fire sign that puts a spark under your bum, and moving deeper into Taurus, which switches into that more controlled, steady, fixed earth sign energy.”

April Tauruses are solely ruled by Venus, too, and that means you’re even more prone to display the typical Taurean traits, like being loyal, grounded, and pleasure-seeking. These textbook Tauruses will also relate to the more generalized strengths and weaknesses attributed to the sign.

Since an April Taurus is coming off the tail-end of chaotic, fiery Aries season, they’re typically known to be good starters but terrible finishers, says Garbis. An April Taurus will have to really buckle down and focus if they want to see a project through, whereas May Tauruses have natural CEO energy.

Since May Tauruses are co-ruled by either Mercury, the planet of logistics, or Saturn, the planet of responsibility, they tend to be more work- and detail-oriented than their April-born counterparts.

Both of these planets bring a diligent, meticulous, and structured energy to Taurus’ already-hardworking vibe, and it makes them unstoppable when it comes to getting things done, even if they insist on doing it at their slow-but-steady Taurus pace.

April Tauruses Are Especially Sensual

As one of the three earth signs, Tauruses are naturally sensual people who love to immerse themselves in the delights of the physical realm. But because first decan Tauruses born in April have the heaviest Venusian influence on their personalities, they tend to be the most indulgent.

These bulls absolutely love anything that tastes, smells, looks, sounds, or feels good. Think delicious food, silky sheets, expensive wine, a sweet-smelling bouquet, pretty home decor, or a date night at the nicest restaurant in town.

Gifts and physical touch are two of Taurus’ love languages, and this is all the more true for those born in April. It’s why you swoon anytime someone holds your hand, and it’s also why you make such a loving and loyal partner.

May Tauruses Are Less Stubborn

Stubbornness is often cited as one of Taurus’ biggest weaknesses — which isn’t too surprising. As a sign represented by the headstrong bull, it makes sense that you might dig your heels in or head-butt anyone who tries to make you do something you don’t want to do.

This is spot-on for April Tauruses, but as you move into the second decan, which includes the Tauruses born in early May, there’s a good chance you’ll be more flexible, adaptable, and quick on your feet. This is because May Tauruses are co-ruled by the mutable planet Mercury.

May Tauruses tend to be more open to change than the average bull, especially as you get closer to the air sign Gemini. If your birthday is in May, it’s likely true that you have a more airy, go-with-the-flow type of energy.

April Tauruses Have Expensive Taste

As one of the signs ruled by the indulgent planet Venus, all Tauruses have a deep love for luxury and an appreciation for anything aesthetically pleasing.

However, April Tauruses have an even more insatiable appetite for opulence. If you’re a first decan Taurus, you’ll be drawn to beauty in all forms, and have expensive taste across the board.

If an April Taurus is working hard, you know it’s because they want a new car, a designer bag, or a luxe couch for their apartment. According to Garbis, a May Taurus might work hard for the sake of it, but an April Taurus can only be lured along by the promise of a reward.

May Tauruses Have A Strong Sense Of Discipline

Taurus is a fixed zodiac sign, which means you love security and stability in all forms. All of your decisions revolve around whether or not you’ll be comfortable, which is why you want a good job, money in your savings account, and a loyal relationship.

Third decan Taureans, born closer to mid-May and co-ruled by Saturn, the planet of structure, tend to have a predictable, reliable personality. “May Taurus is all about the routine and developing the muscles they need to succeed,” says Garbis, and you give off this dependable energy wherever you go.

May Tauruses are strongly disciplined and highly responsible, and that’s why you’re able to see things through, and you always make sure your to-do lists are complete before you lay down on the couch for a nap.

A May Taurus will appreciate a solid schedule and have a strong sense of patience, whereas an April Taurus might seem more flighty, frustrated, or fed up. This is another reason why you may never guess that a May Taurus and an April Taurus are the same zodiac sign when you first meet them.
